Some newspaper reporters may ask for general background information, but most will only want UNFPA’s response to specific questions relating to the day’s news.

  • Ask the reporter the purpose of the call and what sort of information he/she wants.
  • If you don’t have the answers at your fingertips, offer to call back in a few minutes. That should give you enough time to consult with a colleague or at least to take a few deep breaths and jot down some talking points. If it will take longer for you to gather the answers, say so.
  • If you promise to call back in five minutes or an hour, do so. This lets you establish yourself as dependable and considerate of deadlines.
