• UNFPA plays a unique role within the United Nations system- to address population and development issues, with an emphasis on reproductive health and gender equality, within the context of the ICPD Programme of Action and the Millennium Development Goals.
  • Our goals – achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health (including family planning), realizing reproductive rights, reducing maternal death and accelerating progress on the ICPD agenda– are inextricably linked.
  • We focus on improving the lives of millions of women and young people in the developing world by supporting human rights and gender equality and by promoting the understanding of population dynamics.
  • To achieve our goals, we work with development partners to:
    • Expand and improve maternal and newborn health
    • Increase access to voluntary family planning
    • Make HIV and STI services more accessible to pregnant women living with HIV, young people and key populations
    • Advocate for gender equality and reproductive rights
    • Increase young people’s access to sexual and reproductive health services and information
    • Link population dynamics, policymaking and development plans
    • Harness the power of data to ensure evidence-based policies and programmes
