  • UNFPA is on the ground improving lives in about 158 countries – home to 80 per cent of the world’s population.
  • In 2014, all UNFPA offices combined had a total of approximately 2533 regular staff.
  • UNFPA, named formerly the United Nations Funds for Population Activities, was established as a trust fund in 1967 and began operations in 1969. In 1987, it was officially renamed by the UN General Assembly the United Nations Population Fund, reflecting its lead role in the UN system in the area of population. The original abbreviation, UNFPA, was retained. The Fund is a subsidiary organ of the Assembly.
  • Since its establishment UNFPA has had four executive directors:
    • Mr. Rafael M. Salas (1969-1987, Philippines)
    • Dr. Nafis Sadik (1987-2000, Pakistan)
    • Ms. Thoraya Ahmed Obaid (2000-2010, Saudi Arabia)
    • Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin (2010-present, Nigeria).
